Dean DeCocker’s sculpture are distinguished by grace and beauty, a grace that is beauty of form, of composition, of movement and expression, an elegance that comes from clean craft, with a pleasing yet powerful presence. And the central character of this presence and their shape lies in their structure. Although the work begins with a reductive approach by investigating the building blocks of form and basic underlying structures, this visual language has been taken over for purely aesthetic reasons. The sculptures combine, in an ambiguous and paradoxical fashion, the construction, defined by interlocking lines and overlying flat planes, with a lyrical sense of poetic form.

DeCocker generates his forms from sources in architecture and aircraft design, and his sculptures suggest fragments of utilitarian venting systems of airplane wings and propellers. The art here is not a suggestion, however, but in the elaboration of form simultaneously towards and away from the suggested real life thing. Although inspired by machines, his forms some times blur into more organic shapes that help the work move between mechanistic and organic interpretations, this along with an embedding of personal experience, helps to create work that rests between an event and daily life.
